5 Resolutions for Your Job Hunt

Many people enjoy making resolutions for the New Year. After all, seeing a resolution or two through can be empowering and boost your self-esteem. If you are ready to make changes in your career, make a few resolutions to improve your job search.

To shift your career in a positive direction, consider the following 5 resolutions for your job hunt:

  1. Set goals
  2. Evaluate long-term plans
  3. Connect with your contacts
  4. Be organized
  5. Practice self-care

Set Goals

When you start a job search, it is important to know what your goals are so you can secure a job that meets your objectives. For some, additional income or a higher wage is an incentive to look for new employment opportunities. Others have a position they want to secure in the future and they know they need to build their skillset first. Set aside some time to focus on your objectives. Then, you can make your goals a reality.

Evaluate Long-Term Plans

When creating resolutions for your job hunt, remember you do not want to accept a job solely to quit your current position. Too often, individuals who are not happy at work accept another position solely to exit their original job, only to find themselves in another job that doesn’t fit their goals. Instead, keep your long-term plans in mind. For example, many find temporary jobs that allow them to earn an income and explore different workplaces while they figure out which industry is the right fit.

Connect with Your Contacts

Once you are clear on your path forward, connect with friends, family members, previous employers, and staffing firm professionals. It is possible someone in your network knows of a business that is hiring. Learning about seasonal opportunities and full-time positions can give you a variety of employment options.

Stay Organized

Life is busy, so it makes sense that people apply for jobs or talk to friends about an opportunity and simply move onto something else. But if you record your efforts in a spreadsheet or notebook, it can help you remember key details, such as a date that an employer will be making a decision or a month that a company typically on-boards seasonal staff.

Practice Self-Care

Sometimes finding your dream job takes time. And that is ok. Even if an interview didn’t go as well as you hoped, remember there are always new opportunities to explore. Practicing self-care means you will be taking care of your health and building your skills, then you will be a desirable hire when your dream job opens up.
